In 1966, a Look Magazine writer and photographer followed @mets.com minor league prospect Byron Von Hoff through his first season as a pro ball player, which began in Marion, Va. I love this shot of Von Hoff walking through a cow field in full Marion Mets uniform. @sabrpictorial.bsky.social

Normally we see baseball players in front of the camera. However, there are a few who have taken a turn behind the camera, like Washington Senators player Germany Schaefer. Show us other players who have gone behind the camera.

Just stumbled on a stunning color photo of Larry Doby as a Baltimore Oriole, circa 1958, in the @sabrpictorial.bsky.social SABR-Rucker Archive. Doby never played a game with the Orioles, he was traded twice (CHW>BAL>CLE) during the 1957-58 offseason.

Today @baseball-reference.com celebrates its 25th anniversary. Let's honor them with a game many of us play. How many of the 12 players pictured on their home page can you name?

Happy SABR Baseball Cards birthday to Babe Ruth! Would ❤️ to see a Cards or @sabrpictorial.bsky.social blog post on date/location of this great photo. Rucker Archive has 1925-27 and Getty has "somewhere in the Southeast during the trip north from Spring Training before the start of the 1925 season."

Do I know anyone near the University of Manitoba who might be able to do a photo archive search for a SABR member? The Winnipeg Tribune photo collection is there, but seems that only 6,000 of their 250,000 item collection has been digitized...

We are sad to hear about the passing of Jeff Torborg this morning. When he was the manager of the Chicago White Sox, he had a small framed display of all his Topps baseball cards on his desk. @sabrbbcards.bsky.social

For a period of about 15 years, following her husband’s passing, Florence Wolf Dreyfuss was the Pirates owner. William Benswanger, her son-in-law, ran the team and made the crucial decisions, but it was Mrs. Dreyfuss’s ball club. This was during the ‘L. Waner, P. Waner, Vaughan and Traynor’ days.

How do you feel about graded photographs? Is it a good grading system or is there something better? Is the photo market ready for grading?

Who wants to go on a photo research dig? It looks like there is some photo matching work that can be done here. Can we help the SABR Baseball Card Committee take this mini-mystery from 79% solved to 100%.

Any help on figuring out who these guys are? I’m about as good at ID’ing players from the 1940s as I am at winning the lottery. Yes, absolutely tagging @sabrpictorial.bsky.social to try and better crowdsource.

Still thinking about @sabrpictorial.bsky.social’s challenge to post one’s favorite ⚾️ photo. Among those I’ve taken, this might be it. Clamoring for postgame slushees, Pennsylvania, circa 2010.

On this date in 1968, Bob Gibson won the National League Most Valuable Player award. It would be 46 years before another pitcher won NL MVP. #OTD
