I’m happy to. I talked with @scott.hanselman.com a bit last night and I realized he may not at all. I think I last saw both of you like FIVE years ago.
I disagree a bit for several reasons but I read some of your items & do see those as valid too. Rideshare & things felt excessively more expensive there too. That was a big complaint for me when there although I did love the fantastic amount of beer options all over... if you could get there. 🙃🙃🙃
“a sense of entitlement as if it has level of culture or gravitas that it has not earned”
This sums it up perfectly - I do not understand the city’s mentality at all in this regard. I finally had enough this summer and decided to move back east early next year. I’ve been notably happier since.
Lousy weather half the year, rude people, no public transit to speak of, a worsening airport, and a sense of entitlement as if it has level of culture or gravitas that it has not earned. But I’m also very tired after a long week and cranky. I “chose” to live here but I’m not happy about it.
You forgot the insanely high standard of living, the homeless problem, tech bros, high sales tax, tech bros, the mediocre sports team, the tech bros, people not knowing how to drive, and also tech bros.
I hate everything about CT incl the people who hail from there originally. Sorry to anyone from CT it's just a mean place. Most of my family is east coast and even they don't like the place.
Visited Eugene, Oregon recently and was blown away at how kind and welcoming they were. Over the top nice.
Surprised to hear you say Seattle does not have that vibe. I had the impression that west coast vibes were definitely better than east coast (in terms of friendliness).
It's also uncomfortable if you're not white. My cousin got a full ride to Oregon State and came home as fast as he could. He didn't want to talk about it which said plenty.
Yeah no Oregon and Seattle (can’t speak for the rest of Washington) have completely different vibes. Portland and Eugene and other parts of Oregon are so kind. The Seattle Freeze is a very real thing.
Recently got back from a week in Portland and couldn’t agree more. Found a diner for breakfast near where I was staying and they treated me like a regular on the second day. So easy to strike up a conversation about most anything.
Seattle Freeze is a thing and you couldn't pay me to visit Seattle on purpose. Also unfortunately as the economy has collapsed in tech attitudes have gotten worse. I'm from NorCal. I'll be moving to the meanest city in Europe (Vienna) and it will arguably still be miles better than this. Should I
Yeah but I literally just got my business off the ground, though. And I sure as hell won't be able to find work up there as a consultant doing what I do here. It'd be like trying to grab a scrap of meat out of a shark tank. At best, I'd starve and at worst, I'd get eaten alive.

It’s just gotten… yeah.
You have a way with words. That was beautiful. And so true.

(But seriously, it does kind of bum me out that you hate where you live. *hugs*)
Why can’t I have you and @beanknap.bsky.social across the street? There’s even a local library.
