My dad is a Vietnam veteran and retired as a full colonel, and his (insane) view has always been that Vietnam was winnable if we had just never left. Can't lose if you just never leave the field!

There are several possible answers. It's highly unlikely that North Vietnam could ever have compelled the US to leave, but nor could the US compel them to accept the RVN.
When the away team has to cross an ocean just to play ball, it ought to be understood that ties go to the home team.
I did sound obtuse. We were disliked and not trusted in Viet Nam. We killed indiscriminately and failed to gain trust. I was there in-country 70-72. I was lucky
