Aside from all the other stuff, I want to meet the person they're profiling. I don't know of anyone that has that lifestyle AND ALSO doesn't recycle.

And yeah, plastic recycling is a bit of a sham, but that should be handled by making the producers take their waste back and process it.

I am this person, actually. I don't own a car or eat meat for primarily environmental reasons, but I also don't really recycle except metal because I care enough to have done my research and know most recycling is basically a sham.

(Coffee cups aren't even recyclable lol)

A focus on individual actions like recycling (or using oat milk) distracts & diverts energy and time from political organizing and action, which are the single best answer to forcing government to take the actions which would be most effective: ending fossil fuel subsidies & funding human needs.

It should be impossible for me to buy things packaged non-recyclably at the supermarket, and impossible for my refuse to be collected and then not processed for recycling. Consumers can't choose these things it has to be regulation

Unfortunately, you have a point re: regulation. A friend joined a company that makes food waste digesters for restaurants. Even with the strong return in investment, most restaurants wouldn’t get them. Why? Thry said they wouldn’t change unless they were required to by law. 🤷🏻‍♀️

- Viewed as risky -- will it really deliver?
- Different / not "normal" practice: change is hard
- Resource intensive -- decision-making / management / operations + cash required vs other use

My household waste is collected as 'recyclables' all mixed together, it's sorted at the depot, and 'non-recyclables' for incineration. Why is so much packaging still non-recyclable, that needs to be outlawed. Can't even argue consumer choice since there's no recyclable alternatives I might choose
