I did come across a few of these in a green forum some 10 years ago, they tend to go in heavy on 'overpopulation' their preferred 'solution' is to use birth control heavily in sub Saharan Africa, pointing out that Africa isn't the problem when it comes to global warming, but the victim, doesn't help

Excellent points but please stop connecting ecology - which has profound ethical and scientific depth - and fascism. They are utterly opposite things. Fascists are only interested in the environment as it pertains to white human amenity.

The connection already exists whether Ketan makes it or not. Ecological ideas have been used by fascists for ages. Eugenics, race "science", the concept of "carrying capacity", all things that came about by the (mis)use of ecology. All he's saying is be aware of this and push back against it

Is there a better term for this behaviour? “Eco-“ has been a long standing proxy for environmental issues not just shorthand for ‘ecology’. Semantic arguments about what to call it at the expense of clarity make it harder to call out fascist activities in praxis.

Eco-fascism is very unambiguously not ecology, or short-hand for ecology. Isn't it widely understood that the phrase "eco-fascism" refers to something related but obviously just not interchangeable entirely with "ecology"?

As the other commenters pointed out, there *are* historical (and some modern) connections between ecology and fascism, and I think using a specific term of this actually helps separate it clearly from normal ecology!

One of the most striking examples is Garett Harden, a seminal ecological theorist who gave us the "Tragedy of the Commons" and whose ecological thought is pretty deeply entwined with his white supremacism.

People see the first, and understandably classify that messenger as a trusted voice in the climate space, and then the second element comes in - subtly, occasionally, but always there and always carefully deployed so as to instil the exact right amount of helplessness and immobilisation.
