Agreed, but also physical comics as well. It took me years before I embraced zines and other outsider art.

It's hella intimidating. That and the aspects of industrial production that have crept in. Hosting, ads, merch, engagement, how do you protect your IP? etc.

It's great that all this exists, but wow does it make approaching the idea scary.

If someone is just starting out, webcomics can begin like an old school punk band’s career, simple, lo-fi, with lots of energy. The if the creator stays the same? Fine. They have street cred. If they grow, then you get a London Calling or a Zen Arcade or whatever.

I've seen a lot of high quality webcomics just completely burn out too. Even if improving isn't a concern for them, the amount of quality and workload expectations some webcomic artists put upon themselves is just not sustainable.
