i keep thinking about what you’re saying because it feels Real and i feel sad that i can’t grasp what feels so Important about it. and i can’t tell if i don’t understand because it doesn’t match my world view or if it’s simply because i don’t have enough experience. i guess i’ll grind for more xp

for me... saying a phrase as dumb and incorrect as "kill gameplay" over and over again is a way of smashing a large seemingly indestructible object that is in my way, and only my way, and which only exists in my mind, with a gigantic unwieldy hammer. smash, smash, smash

i say this not because i think it's dumb of me to keep saying it but because its roughness is what makes it useful for me, but hard perhaps for you to think about (sorry tess!!!), it keeps changing in little ways, i can turn it around in my hands, change the weight, go in for another smash

i do have a more specific response, which is not as much about my large hammer and is much more about the "shut up machine" meme -- i think i am noticing the material of gameplay and the ways in which it is getting in the way of me being able to engage with human feeling (mine, the artist's, etc)

during the intermission of a play i was really enjoying i happened to be standing next to a couple of people chatting about the play and the one guy must have said "chekhov's gun" like three times in the space of a minute or two.

i wanted him to for the love of god say something that was not just "wow check out the Play thing this Play did" but it was all i could hear. (i don't know anything about plays, this was sort of my first playwatching experience, it was great, i recommend it.)

I've been thinking a bit abt kill gameplay lately. Still unpacking it but yeah I think the phrase resonates with how far off some games continue to stray from some form of self expression
