I've been pretty happy with my times subscription. For the ft I just use https://www.smry.ai/ or the internet archive or something like that. I only sub to NYT because for a short time I believed in paying for good journalism. Been struggling with that belief as of late.
I am on the brink of doing exactly the same. The only reason I kept with the Times was my cricket mania (but I get good quality cricket writing from other sources now).
The only thing stopping me is that the full subscription is too expensive and I'm not sure what the digital one entails.
I have the standard digital FT subscription. It covers 99% of the stuff available on the website. Most of the premium stuff is quite business-y and doesn't usually interest me. Pretty sure I paid about £250 a year, which is less than the Times £312!
I can't help with the comparison, but I have clung on to the Times mainly for the Sunday travel quiz. The constant mention of "Labour" when they mean "the government" sets the tone now, and I will be interested to see what replies you get
I do mean that and never tried without a sub (because we've always had one). They don't bother to put it on the iPad edition most weeks now. I will try - thank you
I have an FT sub. Way better than the times. Plus it gets me Illuminati miles. (The last sentence is not real FAOD given the current information economy)
I got very excited when I went back to university for an MA in the autumn and I realised I now had institutional access to the FT again. It really is so much better, yes.
Yes, I did exactly that a few years ago. Really took against some of the Times reporting. The FT is much better. They obviously have a slant towards business news but they do have excellent coverage of serious non-business news too.
I concur. Although I sometimes crumble and buy a Saturday or Sunday Times in the newsagents. I’ve been so disappointed by Guardian over the last 12 years or so that I ended up neglecting the Observer and now that’s being shunted off. 😢
https://subs.ft.com/weekend_podcast has a good introductory offer on weekend print + standard digital, although the weekend editions tends to pile up...
I do like the Weekend FT. It has excellent writers and supplements, with the possible exception of HTSI which is bonkers. I subscribe to the print edition.
Apparently Revolut online bank offers an online digital only FT subscription as part of the perks for accounts that cost £3.99 a month. Might be worth considering if price is a concern as it would be far cheaper than paying for it directly through the FT itself.
FT every time. Global coverage of current events. Thoughtful, generous coverage of the arts . Succinct articles. Superb subediting. & if you need tips on how to insure your yacht, or what to look for when buying an island, you are in the right place. No horoscopes though.
you can via https://pressreader.com and a valid library card, get access to print editions of The Economist, Guardian and Telegraph for free. Not sure if the Times is there too.
I switched in mid-2022, after one too many anti-trans editorials. I do miss the quantity of UK news coverage, and have to confess I am not as enthralled by the machinations of various mining companies as other readers are, but it's the only decent alternative, I think.
Yes me. No regrets. Quality had plummeted. Was fed up with Times sacking thoughtful columnists like Aaronovitch and Collins. I have retained the Times Puzzles app and pay £1 a month for Sudoku and Crosswords.
The quality of writing and analysis there is execrable. The Times and Telegraph still have rock solid sports depts in contrast with the rest of the paper. FT is v expensive. Saturday edition is brilliant tho. But since David A left the Times is far less attractive.
FT is great. Cancelled Times sub as it's gone too tabloid and veered to the right. Lacks balance.
FT has great newsletters too. The I is good for balanced opinion.
I took that step several years ago and occasionally reading the Times confirms the choice. Note, if you tell the Times you’re leaving, you may get another year’s sub at a large discount.
You don’t need to. Just get a library card and the Press Reader App. You can read the FT (& many other publications for free! (Not The Times though). #TopMoneySavingTip
Do it, you won’t ever regret it.
I subbed from the start of the paywall, binned it 5 yrs ago.
The hounding of Ben Stokes for something his Mum’s first husband, who Stokes had never met, did was absolutely the final straw.
The FT is a different class.
I don’t subscribe, but IMO the FT is a far superior newspaper these days. Its coverage has broadened greatly in recent years, and Weekend FT is excellent (though I find the How To Spend It supplement rather obscene).
