That seems right to me, but I wonder whether we can provide something better than two separate tendencies. Couldn't we just say that there is a tendency to relate the expected level of deliberate control about what one shares of oneself to the level of attribution to a true self?

Then we could say that in natural environments we expect people to use less deliberate control about what they share, because they are in a safe and familiar place. They do not need to be as careful about what they share in a more natural environment, because they know the environment well.

In many unnatural environments they will be less sure how everything works, how people react, etc... They need to be deliberate/careful. They will control what they share of themselves, if possible. But some of these environments make that control impossible, then we attribute to a true self again.

The notion of "the natural environment for human beings" that we use in our studies is very different from the notion of the environment that is statistically frequent

People are often found in cities, working in offices, hunched over laptops -- but this is not seen as their natural environment

Instead, the idea is that if you suddenly had to spend a year living in the wilderness, you would thereby be forced to live in the environment that is more natural for human beings, and whatever you did in that environment would be more revealing of your true self
