imo this is related to one of the reasons why ford pardoned nixon: actually delving into all the sordid details of watergate would reveal a system of semi-normalized lawlessness built by elites from both parties stretching back to at least truman. ford et al thought it better to sweep under the rug

I think it was less that than more straightforward party-protection, as it is crystal clear now that Nixon's shit implicated a large number of GOP operatives and the RNC (including one George Herbert Walker Bush) and actually delving into it would have destroyed the Republican party, not just Nixon.

i think it can be both? i see your point and don’t disagree. but ford wasn’t the only one who welcomed the choice. most of the political elite praised his decision — i think that went beyond partisanship and spoke to cold war dynamics and an era when parties were closer aligned plus protecting FBI
