I was curious about adopting. Aren't these birds the lifetime bond type? How do they adapt to new owners? Do they remind, and if so, how does that process go?
They can bond with new people, however frequent rehoming is traumatic for them, so if you're going to adopt you really need to commit. A lot of people get one because they're beautiful and can talk and don't realize they're noisy and messy and destructive and need a lot of enrichment and attention
As someone who has had birds my whole life... They are not pets. Even the 'easier' species are impossible to truly raise as healthy and happy, they will always have something wrong with them. If you take one on it will likely need to be the biggest commitment in your life
Thank you for pointing out adoption. There are far too many parrots languishing in rescues waiting for forever homes. Adopt don’t shop. I’m owned by three parrots right now. They are an immense commitment.
Beautiful Conure. I have 2 adopted Senegals, 1 Red Belly and 7 Budgies. Some of them were given up due to needing medicine, but they are good guys and I do not mind the medicine times. This is Stumper
I agree. They belong in the wild where they were captured and sold on black market. The pets we had were raised here. We even rescued a starling at one time. After regaining his health, he was free to go but still had his home inside. He would fly to the door where we let him in for the night.
How could they? I have two of them. They are the loves of my life. Mine do a cute (somehow a bit evil sounding) little chuckly. They are the best birds ever!
I would love a parrot, but I've looked into adopting & it was too expensive for me. Over $1,000 in adoption fees. I have two large rescue dogs, as well, although I don't think that would be a problem. Except that the bird might pick up the Husky-mix's howl.
Agree! It seems fundamentally wrong to cage a creature meant to fly. I did buy my monster as a chick and we hand fed him, would never do that again. We forgive his bad disposition cause, well, I’d probably be the same in his situation.
So cute and love that you put the plea to not buy exotic birds, adopt first. I would add, please know it's a lifetime commitment, my quaker lived 28 years and that's a relatively short time considering some birds live 70+ years
We have a Senegal parrot that we inherited after my parents passed. I love him but wish this situation never happened. We can’t take him out much because he attacks people but he’s also very attached to me so I’m afraid to give him away. DONT BUY EXOTIC PETS.
Hi Mark and Toro,
You were one of the first posts I saw when I joined bluesky.
We, too, have a blue-crowned conure and he also has an evil villain laugh! Maybe it’s standard with that model?
We got him from his previous owner and he’s been a member of our family for nearly 20 years.
I clicked play but forgot I was playing soothing bedtime music from my phone via Bluetooth for my son, who's scared of the dark...Welp that's confirmed his suspicions that something evil is lurking in the dark.
Cool bird though!
My ex’s parents adopted a lovely cockatoo that was allegedly a proficient talker… his Mum mentioned to her son about 4 days later that it hadn’t said anything & he just replied ‘he probably can’t get a word in edge ways’ & his Dad said ‘I know how he feels’ 😂
My parents African Grey used to imitate water dripping and the beep of a fire alarm. It made us all crazy! He did some funny stuff, too, but that was awful!
Max is 8. His owner died so he’s now my new little buddy via a vet rescue. He’s settling in and loving exploring. He’s a proper little character. I’m hoping he’ll speak with a Yorkshire accent
Ahhhh! Makes me miss my Yellow Nape Amazon that I had for 33 years and raised from the time she was a baby. She passed away 2 years ago. They’re such characters!
Many years ago I adopted an African Grey Parrot. He would chase after the cats say “here kitty kitty and then when the cats appeared he would make this ear piercing noise the cats were scared to death of.
My bird Neptune, also a Blue Crowned Conure, can do a similar evil laugh. I adopted him from my old neighbor who couldn't care for him anymore. I wonder if maybe the birds are from the same breeder? Neptune can say a lot of things and makes a few different noises, including the evil laugh.
I saw a video on Neighborhood Wars where a woman screaming for help could be heard coming from a man's house but he was just sitting there, working on his motorcycle in the driveway and acted like didn't hear it. It was his cockatoo!
I saw that shared on Facebook. I thought it was hilarious. You would think that the owner would have warned his neighbors about his bird!!!
It was cool that in the end it made everyone's day! They were all seen cracking up.
😂
I saw that vid on reddit. So funny. Ya the neighbors called the cops because of the screaming and the guy had them wait outside and he came out with the bird.I think his older owner taught him to scream for help.

Please don’t buy birds; the exotic pet trade is unethical and inhumane. There are many parrots who need adoption if you’re ready for the commitment.
Kudos for taking Toro under your wing for the long haul!
Probably annoying st 4 AM...

Unfortunately, made me miss my parrot (she passed a few years back)😭

I miss my old boy.
That's amazing!
