good rule of thumb: do you know the person you are replying to? is the reply you are about to make something you would want to hear from a stranger? no? leave it in the drafts

I made that mistake the very first day I was on Twitter, got called out for it, and apologized. Ever since then I always think before I post and very often end up deleting something because I'd rather be careful than inadvertently pushing a button.
Exactly. "Am I starting some shit with this comment?" is something I try to ask myself, with the follow-up question "If this person THINKS I am starting some shit with them, am I prepared for the timesink of the ensuing argument?"
Exactly what I said earlier. Would you talk like that to someone at the, say, grocery store? Someone you are talking to face to face? That should be the standard.
Agreed. Think about the concept of the ‘town square.’ It requires a modicum of decency to discuss fraught topics in person, which is why it rarely happens. Social media has created a space where all feel free to argue about anything, anytime, anonymously. Things they’d never say out loud in public
