“they were polite to me so they can’t be a monster” is the most consistent failure of elite society

Discworld QOTD, from The Color of Magic

The principle at stake here is so fundamental it predates even Magna Carta in English law, and before that stretching all the way back to Rome, and has its similarly ancient equivalents in every legal system in the world, because it's the inherent bedrock foundation of what courts and laws are for.

For your mental health I present: Plum’s paws

chag pesach sameach, everyone

“how did they lose to those dipshits” me watching the Red Sox 🤝 me watching the Democrats

How it started // How it’s going

so the question at this point is how does John Roberts handle “we haven’t even tried to facilitate bringing him back because we can’t” it’s brazen defiance of the Supreme Court, and everyone knows it, and if he and the rest of the Gang of Six pretend this is a good faith effort it’s all over

If the United States wanted him out of that prison, he would already be home, with or without El Salvadorian assistance.

“the AP is no longer in the White House press pool but the reporter for MyPillow is” has broken me

strange women lying in ponds distributing swords starting to look like a reasonable basis for a system of government

this woman was considered one of the frontrunners for the next standard bearer of the Democratic Party, Trump won her state by 1.5%, and she’s decided to throw it all away to join the Capitulation Caucus tremendously disappointing, especially with Pritzker right next door

these people desire cultural power infinitely more than state power

you'll never be rid of him

one of the greatest examples of human solidarity is the wordless exchange between a parent and another parent whose child is having a public meltdown

this remains the most baffling story in tech in the last decade yes, salaries are high yes, hardware is expensive $45 billion is still an utterly staggering cash burn and I am desperate to get a breakdown of exactly where it went

A helpful guide to the current state of US trade policy:

reddit is so great man. r/appliances user asks if his oven is supposed to be shooting literal flame jets at ankle height

lord willing we will one day prosecute miller for crimes against humanity

the truth about having kids is that it’s really hard I love my boys and I’m so glad I have them and they also take up a truly enormous amount of my time and energy and there’s no way I’m having a third kid even with the best support in place it is just so, so much work

you can’t make me read a Liz Bruenig piece, I refuse, that’s sicko behavior

are we going to need some people who voted for Trump to come around and realize they made a huge mistake? yes do any of owe them personal absolution for it? no, and they should feel a deep sense of shame for the rest of their lives

just absolute incoherent nonsense based on who yelled at him or got him in a room last and who knows if any of this lasts note to the business community now suffering buyer’s remorse: it’s the uncertainty that kills you, not the regulations

"I DO NOT ABSOLVE YOU. WRITE YOUR OWN EMAILS." has been playing on loop in my head all day

even if we throw these people out of power the enduring legacy of Trump is that nobody can ever again trust the US government to keep a promise, and that will come back to bite us over and over again what a shameful thing this is

Restoring trust and credibility to the United States will require not just pushing Trump out of power but putting him and all his cronies in prison.
