One of my favorite Pratchett quotes. It sums up Ankh Morpork so well, and I think it also kinda explains what I love about Springfield on The Simpsons.
Publication order is so underrated. You get to experience STP's moods, his evolving style. You get to feel when he started to think, no, this is Important. This is not just a fantasy world, it's a comment on our own.
A vast Series of novels written by Terry Pratchett. They are bascially parody fanatsy lietrature, often also making fun of real world things like religious zealotry and such.
You can really feel how much Terry loved cities and people in how he wrote about Ankh-Morpork. It's dirty and grimy and annoying, and it's also full of life and wonder and love. Yes we have a river that doesn't flow so much as it crawls, but that's just evidence of how vibrant the community is
I noticed on a reread recently how often there are jokes based on two characters commenting obliquely on something happening that's entirely undescribed.
Hmm, I've never thought about this wrt Pratchett and my aphantasia. His way of describing things is and isn't visual simultaneously. It focuses on the feel or vibe of the time/place/thing. Something that's easier for me to grasp.

but this one? this one works, this paragraph gives me an excellent grasp of the essence of Ankh-Morpork
I think that author might go far!
"not what a horse looks like" indeed
If I wanted to exhaustive visual descriptions of my story I'd pick up a graphic novel!
So I consider that more bad writing.
