I think it's kind of indicative of how quickly Terry got better at characterization that Rincewind became a lovable cameo character despite being the main character in the first two books.

But the opening two books are so vastly different from the rest of the series they barely belong in cannon! They're just straight parody, and almost everything in them is different- except, techncially, for Rincewind.
I tend to recommend book 3 to start.
"Where to?"
Rincewind tried to make his philosophy clear time and again, people never got it.
"Don't you worry about to," he said. "In my experience that always takes care of itself. The important word is away.”
In a way that doesn’t happen e.g. when Granny Weatherwax meets Nobby Nobbs.
