Maybe it's time to acknowledge that The Force Awakens was a pile of trash whose set-up didn't make a lick of sense.

I get that, after the prequels, everyone was excited by the prospect of a director capable of getting actual performances from his actors and the new cast was very endearing but still

One of the problems with the sequel films is that it remained relentlessly hazy throughout how the sodding galaxy worked, which meant the stakes were always unclear.
That ridiculous finale was the cherry on top of that and the thing for which Abrams should feel most ashamed.

Bret Devereaux wrote a blog that said if TLJ is going to be a high speed chase hours after starkiller's destruction, the broadcast should be "we killed the super weapon - it's safe to fight them now" bc presumably the galaxy thinks it's still operational & wouldn't want to f with it.
