I don't know how one can develop writing skill like that. Clearly practice and a lot of hard work and care go into it, but lots of writers care and work hard and practice and don't reach that. I don't understand that level of whatever it is that makes this kind of writer.
I believe he just read and read,he read everything- folk tales, history-Greek legends-Roman law, everything.And he could write so well, and introduce such humour into his work, including what people are like. I swear I know someone like everyone who he wrote about! (Minus the magical powers, obvs)
You're so right! We get distracted by his abundant wit and humour and all the great jokes and observations that we forget that THE MAN CAN WRITE! This one about Vimes from Jingo is one of my favourites:
All the time, and it's not just the insanely quotable ones, his descriptions are hugely evocative, and make it incredibly easy to picture the Discworld (and partly explain why the Sky adaptations disappointed so much).
