The IRS could do that, but are restrained by laws passed by Congress at the behest of the tax accounting industry. And of course are part of the Executive Branch and therefore subject to presidential whims.

California trialed it. People loved it. Grover Norquist (unelected anti-tax guy that Republicans all make a pledge to) hates it as he want maximum pain around anything tax related - so Republicans have to be against it.

This is a story about the Republicans' deliberate destruction of a free alternative to a profit motivated company (Turbo Tax) simply in order to make citizens' lives more difficult and more expensive. As elected reps, they have lost the thread of "the common good".
