Yesterday it denied me toff. I’ve also had midden and tule nixed.

Not sure if midden is also used in the UK, but tule is a western US word for a type of fog. It also will take occasional French words but not Spanish ones. I tend to think of it as not US English as a whole but eastern US. (It is the NYT so I guess that makes sense.)

But wouldn't it be “flanneling” in the American spelling? Like “traveling,” because we don't double all Ls when adding -ing? (Not that it'd appear that way, either, necessarily)
