Mine are either boring AF like Supervillain or wildly anachronistic or otherwise out of place like Ebenezer. There is no in between.

For reasons I can't even begin to dissect, I use versions of Michael for my placeholder name, and then they stick. I have a Michael, a Meeka, a Micha, a Michelle, and a Micaela. Luckily, not all in one story

In stories that were more slice of life I would use my friends‘ names and just replace them until I saw THAT episode of The Office.

“Dickhead”, “Deathdude”, “Sassypants”, “Loserlover”, “Punchface”, etc. but strictly for pending names. They might turn into real nicknames in the book though.
