146 years ago today, my 2GGF died (Daniel O'Brien). Through newspapers and other records I've traced him through 3 Irish counties, and 6 parishes. They preserved so much. Loving notes from a grandfather (Daniel) to a grandchild, photographs of the journey to New Zealand (via then Ceylon) c 1912, etc and have been very generous. They even called their dairy herd in NZ after Daniel's home in Ireland. #Genealogy

Bulawayo and Ceylon weren’t so common stopovers on the journey to NZ, though family being in Australia as well as NZ was quite common.

Well Bulawayo was an onward stop from Cape Town. Three of Daniel's sons had immigrated there probably during the 1870s, two settled in Cape Town, the third moved north to Bulawayo. It was a 4th son who immigrated to New Zealand with his children (he died Australia where two of his children settled).

I’ve heard of other people referring back to Ireland with their farm names etc. I think @mghistorical.com may have had this happen in her family.

It's such a lovely idea - a continuity between the past and present. I came across a Long Island (New York) paper some time ago that mentioned a flock of pedigree sheep owned by an Irish man, his farm on Long Island had a familiar name and I was able to trace him to a local townland. #IrishGenealogy
