He doesn’t want a policy outcome. He wants to dominate the other side of the deal, get some sort of outcome (he’s indifferent as to what), and then make a spectacle of how badly he dominated the other side. He’s generating content, not policy.

I believe one already knows what one wants in some points. This is also shown by the 10% vs. the 25% with others. Decades-long alliances hold no significance under the new fascist management, and one is even willing to be recklessly friendly with arch-enemies if it serves their own interests.

In a nutshell, that's the Trump problem. He has no credibility in any negotiation. Also, that fundamentally he only cares about himself, so all of these conversations have little meaning to him because the state of the economy or climate or security are all just noise for him.

I think it's less that he doesn't know what he wants, but that he doesn't understand how things actually work to begin with. His zero sum thinking means he thinks a trade deficit is a sign that America is somehow being screwed, and his ignorance of tariffs means he thinks they have to pay them.

Escalate the trade war and go on offense. Start negotiating an international trade deal with all other countries and freeze US out of the negotiation until they cease with the tarriff bullshit.
