Ask a pedestrian to walk on a bike path. Would it be safe for them to walk between two lanes of car traffic? No. Cyclists should never ride between two car lanes.

I don’t agree. That road looks pretty bad, but the cyclists who need it for a connection are better off having the bike lane. There are several places I ride that now have bike lanes like that and I was glad they were installed.

I suspect that if you sat at this intersection, all of the bicyclists would be on the sidewalk. That's certainly the case with configurations like this in LA. I don't think they're all wrong about what's safer!

I ride in configurations like this all the time, and I rarely see a bicyclist trying the sidewalk. 'Course, there often isn't a sidewalk, but even if there is, I don't see cyclists on it. You have to yield at every curb cut, drivers aren't looking for bikes on the sidewalk, I don't find it safe.

Sidewalks often introduce a host of other safety issues. Wide highways like this are gonna have big box stores with ginormous parking lot entrances and cars turning at high speed while you're less visible on the sidewalk. You also need to constantly worry about sidewalk width and cub cuts.

Wow! These get referred to as "murder strips". I personally find they can be OK if very wide, and on a relatively slow road, and let you go straight on without being cut up by turning traffic. But - argh! - that one is terrifying.

I'd rather have a *better* bike lane. Ideally to the right of all the traffic lanes, wide enough for plenty of bikes, and with its own phase of the traffic lights. (And no right-turn-on-red rule!)

If it does need to be between straight-on and right-turn traffic it needs to be much much wider really

That's why it needs to be properly segregated, well back, and have its own phase of the lights. Ideally there shouldn't be such enormous roads in the same places bikes/people want to move around, but I know things are different in the US.

I think having its own phase of lights is key here. Because the times I’ve almost been hit have been from a car turning right on a green and not seeing me come up the bike lane on the right of them. I don’t even blame the driver that much in that scenario because it’s pretty easy to do.

I would get off the road and walk my bike across as a pedestrian with my anxiety cranked to 11.

This is an analysis I did in Austin, the pink lines are multi lane arterials, red dots are dead peds and cyclists. 90% of fatalities on 10% of roads.

People who tell me to get off the stroads typically have fewer suggestions about where I should ride instead. And some of those sections are ridiculous, with repeated intersections with the very stroads I was supposed to avoid.

I hear you. Before I moved, I lived in Austin with three grocery stores within a two mile radius, and I couldn't get to any unless I crossed a stroad.

I admire your courage in riding there. I hope you remain safe.

We deserve better infrastructure than this, and I want policy makers to know that.

I would stand at the edge of the crosswalk until someone stopped. No matter how long it took. That's what I mean by anxiety turned to 11.

It's a miserable experience, I agree. We shouldn't have to choose between safety and comfort, especially when the dangerous drivers get both.

The bike lane of terror coming home from Torrance Costco and doctors’ offices. Heading west on Lomita Blvd at Hawthorne Blvd (CA 107). It’s useful at rush hour when the cars are stopped. When traffic is free flowing & 45 mph, it’s terrifying. I’m on the sidewalk

It's a nice touch that there are dotted lines denoting the car lanes in the intersection, but not the bike lane, so you have absolutely no idea where you have to ride to avoid getting pancaked as you cross an intersection the size of Texas

Before/after bike lane on Sand Hill Road over Highway 280 toward Menlo Park CA. I rode that bridge for decades before the bike lane, and the bike lane is better. Way way better. I had to ride where the bike lane is anyway, and now there's room.
