This sh*t goes so deep. We invented country music. They stole it, excluded us, and most recently spent the better part of a year telling us a Black woman from Houston wasn’t country enough. Even she was shocked when she rightfully won that Grammy.

ha ha .. Don't confuse Country Music with the Blues. And you invented EVERYTHING ?? Nah .. If you ask the Russians, they invented everything. If you ask the Itailians, they invented everything. If you ask a North Korean, they will tell you there little fat dicktator invented everything.
That's your rebuttal..."fake news". Not "we have evidence...". Ironic you post so much about stupid ppl. Think critically. Search primary sources. Put your research hat on and don't just emotionally dismiss facts because they don't line up with your world view.
The sooner that we understand that racism will forever be alive and allowed in this country , the quicker we’ll except the fact that we need to come together and support more people in our own communities and the people that want to be apart of our communities. We can’t change the unchangeable!!
Neil Young has produced albums in at least 8 genres, including country. Robert Plant, formerly of Led Zeppelin, has done folk/bluegrass albums with Alison Krauss. Dolly Parton is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! The shade thrown at Beyonce is just racism.
And the cowboy comes from Spain & evolved to what it is today in the prairies of Sonora & Texas when that was Spain & later Mexico. Not until they invaded Texas, while it was Mexico, did they learn about it. Don't get me started on Barbecue & chili...
Yup. But the American tradition of bbq comes directly from when the Spanish interacted with the Taino & their method of slow, smoke cooking. The english barbecue comes from the spanish barbacoa that itself is a transliteration of a taino word. And all the spices are native. Srsly it's an easy search
This predates anglo arrival to America by a long shot. Spanish brought the cattle and cowboy culture (where it's from) and cooked it in the style and spices of the natives. Now ya'll claim our culture. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But anglos aren't the authors of that culture...
A weird thing I noticed is the difference black women get vs black men in the fandom. Country has had Charie Pride and Aaron Neville, Darius Ruker, and many others. They were all welcomed, and there wasn't a mass hysteria if they won awards.
You're exactly right. I find it interesting that when someone of color's song ends up on the top country chart they suddenly have to "redefine" what country is
Not all artist embrace their musical roots, they feel they will be more successful in other genres. Tracy Chapman is an artist I respect. She didn't need all that glam or ventilation to the hair. Just needed a stage and good story telling.
I've been saying if the album was so "bad" and if she's "not a country artist" then why did she win? Maybe if the other artists in the genre weren't so bad they would have won.
it's all a big fat stinking lie too..they have no constitution..no law...they don't even belong here...say the original landlords so...but you? Girl, I'd say you get to stay wherever the hell you want!
I’m glad you sent me this article. As an earlier and now Tracy Chapman fan, I now understand the story of how Luke Combs took the song.
My kids who are in their early 20s as well as others thought that he wrote it. I said no. I played them Tracy Chapman. Again, ty 4 the article.
Generally, I don't pay attention to awards because I just don't care, but I was genuinely amused by all racist MAGA outrage over her winning, so I'm good with it 🤣 even though I didn't like the album ✌️
The Beyonce album was not very good and I've listened to it several times since it was released. I'm not arguing against your point regarding Black artist contributions to the genre, only that I did not like the album. I didn't liked Posty's country album, either.
The Grammy's are a complete joke. The Rolling Stones won best rock album over Fontaines DC and IDLES, to a lesser extent Pearl Jam. Mfers found a tape of John Lennon, called it Beatles, and that somehow won, too? Gimme a break.
elvis was bringing Black music to white teenagers when white parents banned Black music. the Black artists he borrowed from gave him permission behind the scenes. it was punk politics.
he gave back a plenty. he was a "steal from the rich, give to the poor" kind of performer.
Elvis stole nothing. Covering songs isn't stealing. Elvis is on video and audio giving credit to the original sources. Every black artist whose works he recorded was paid for the privilege and their names appear on his record labels. But never let facts get in the way of a good story, eh?
Back in the day everyone covered other people’s music. Mr. Bojangles was sung by so many people in the 1970s, it got old. Not as common now. Elvis also grew up with a lot of black people. You live what you know.
Been sayin’ it since she dropped the album. Fans of country music should be kissing her ass right now for injecting some soul and authenticity back into the genre. Sincerely, a white man fed up with fraudulent bro country horseshit. 🙏
My understanding is that country music is the off shoot of a number of different genres. Of these, the Black contribution is just one. Irish folk music is another. There are others. Country music is a the result of contributions by many people from various ethnic groups which makes it uniquely…
The thing that gets me is that the banjo, the quintessential country music instrument, is a West African invention. The word even comes from the Bantu "mbanza." Trying to make this a lily white genre is an ahistorical fiction.
I don’t get why it has to b such a big deal. People should b able to just make whatever music they wish, and if u don’t like it, don’t listen to it. But GEEZ! We have FAR bigger issues to deal with right now. 🙄 she’s incredibly talented. THAT can’t be denied
Tell us more. I knew about jazz, blues, hip hop, and gospel, but not country! I need to educate myself some more. Wouldn't we live in a boring, one-dimensional world without DEI????
I posted a bunch of poetry on that topic today because folks are vexing me. Cowboy imagery in early hip-hop, and rhyme schemes nearly identical to early cowboy poetry are not coincidental. I'm not a huge fan of Beyoncé, but she EARNED that Grammy. Country music is black music, period.
Black music and Spanish/Mexican lifestyle and culture. Look into the origins of the cowboy, barbecue, and chili. Speaking of gastronomy barbecue and chili are a fusion of Native American and Spanish cuisine. What in the hell did they contribute to the culture other than racism?
As an Afro-Taino Boricua who did a presentation on this, you are 100% accurate. Barbakoa, itself is a word from the Taíno people.
One could argue that the Irish also contributed with ballads. However, they sure as hell weren't considered White until the Anglos needed to cover up the Irish genocide.
And on the other hand, if one is familiar with the history of piracy and its multicultural roots, one could argue that Irish sea ballads were heavily influenced by Griot music.
This take discounts the contributions of other groups, such as the Irish. I don't think it's fair to say one single group is responsible for the advent of American country music.
The sad thing is.. it isn't even just country music.
House music, Jazz, and even TECHNO have black people to thank for their inception, yet white people tend to just take credit for those genres and erase the people who started it. It's insane how much black erasure there is.
capital in US - takes any organic community, steals the credit for it, commodify it (rip the soul out of it) and the marketing execs (not from the culture) stereotype it and sell that stereotype to people (also not of the culture) who then misrepresent/don’t understand the real culture nor try.
In the poetry world, it's slam. Slam started in the neighborhoods, yet Sam Smith, a white construction worker, is known as the 'father of slam', and there are so many voices in the slam community trying to silence black poets.
IKR! He stole slam and battle rap for his own gain and it was completely intentional. There's a reason why even though the early rules were weirdly similar to battle rap, it is stated that music cannot be used in whitewashed slam poetry. He didn't want people realizing what he was stealing.
I didn't know this about music, I just know that when I started out in the slam scene a statement about him was read at the beginning of every competition.
My own former slam master told me once, "the world doesn't want to hear another poem about a dead black child."
And you're not wrong. Without all the contributions to music from EVERYONE, we would not be where we are today. Music is constantly evolving. Without African and South American rythyms, it would be a boring music scene. Bo Diddly brought those beats in rock and roll, more musicians added to it.
who would ever think German electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk and Japanese electro group Yellow Magic Orchestra would be the ones to give Afrika Bambaata the base keyboard hooks and beats to build hip-hop on? and that song (Planet Rock) still kills today.
The world would be a better place if we stopped trying to claim tribal ownership of categories of creative expression, and instead tried to maximize our own creativity, while supporting others to do the same, without corporate oversight of the creative process.
I *am* still a bit miffed that she didn't do much at all to elevate Rhiannon Giddens, Mickey Guyton, etc who were already there in country music, and instead effectively stepped on their backs so she could soar. There HAVE BEEN black women in country all along. Why did it have to be Beyoncé?
I did. And I know that both of the women above helped her make it.
Full disclosure I do work in a country music venue so I may be more aware of existing black country artists... but I just feel like outside of album credits, she could have done a lot more to lift other black women in practice.
So, beyond tapping them to help make the album, Beyoncé’s already well known practice of uplifting new artists and paying homage to existing legends, PLUS the Black artists she collaborated with on Cowboy Carter alone—what more was she expected to do in an industry that made it a point to snub her?
And understand I’m speaking primarily to country music. I am by no means her biggest fan, but the expectation that she do more when she does so much speaks to the racism that kept her from winning a CMA to begin with.
It wasn’t just racism that kept her from being nominated/winning. The deep seeded misogyny in Nashville has gotten even worse in the last 20
years. If she had been a black man, she may have garnered some nominations, like Kane Brown, Jimmie Allan, and Darius Rucker have.
Yeah but... A: she's from the deep south and B: the album is definitely twangy and C: the reason I brought up the other folks she is in competition with is that like... nobody is batting an eyelash about all the shitty white yankees from the suburbs making awful music and calling it country.
When I was a kid Pat Boone was the musical great white hope and he would steal Little Richard's stuff and ruin it, but he was the one who got on all the variety shows.
It's a rich history, if anybody cares to learn it. You can hear the echoes of slave songs, railroad sounds, horse hooves, gospel music, working class struggles and more.
9/11 destroyed country music. It's time for a rebirth.
The truth of the matter has always been that we are the fabric of this nation. It doesn’t move forward without us. They know that and that’s why they’re trying to take us all back to an imaginary time when we weren’t the MFs who laid the foundation for what America is today. They’d rather burn it.
"The truth of the matter has always been that we are the fabric of this nation". Another inaccurate claim! You don’t have to make absurd claims to make folks realize the importance of Black contributions to our country.
Bet you don’t know a damn thing about the Black men who did so much to ….
And please understand I’m not saying lay down your life because more than enough of our ancestors have. I don’t plan to. But I’m saying we don’t have to and should not lay down and accept this bullsh*t anymore.
My Irish granddad laid railroad ties with the sons of freed slaves in Tennessee. It was these folks who played music with my kin and introduced them to different genres. Especially gospel music. So much of our national identity is owed to black folks.
What with Western instruments, the English Language and a Irish and Scottish influence while living in a European Culture. I think country music is a matter of time and place. So. . .nah.

That's why they need to take pride in the "accomplishments" of people who share the same skin colour as them.
They've got nothing of their own
to be proud about

Eminem is super explicit about this on Without Me.
We really do need a "name 5 country songs" to have an opinion on it rule.

Notice any similarities?
