I've had fun doing them with Tikz in LaTeX .... but most people don't seem to enjoy LaTeX! And even Tikz is not very user-friendly.

I've also tried some wysiwyg flow-chart apps like Scapple but I am not really impressed with any so far. Probably a freemium web app could be the answer

I think forest is just kind of an upgrade in general over tikz-qtree? I remember using tikz-qtree in college like a decade ago

Here's a tree I made years ago (a transl. from Greek) using Tikz. It looks ok, but I remember it taking a while, at least if you don't do it regularly
