Is... is Half Life 2 a boomer shooter now... ?
It still has exploration-based gameplay, no two-weapon limit, health packs and physics-based movement, so it *kinda* fits the bill, but it's also REALLY story-heavy and constantly interrupts the gameplay and I feel like that doesn't fit so well.

I think the difference is the focus of the game. HL2 has those mechanics, yes, but is focused more on the story and a slower pace.
Whereas something like Prodeus is "here's a gun, shit's gone wrong, go shoot em"
I also kinda want to put the early Halos in close proximity to this
I never even really thought of them as first person shooters honestly. They've always just been "Half-Life" They are FPS but I think their strive for pushing tech and narrative makes them a cut above
Which... I mean.
I don't think it is in the traditional sense, the original Half-Life is closer, but it's old enough for you to be called 'unc' if you bring it up around members of later Gen Z and Alpha.
Maybe we need a new category, unc shooters? 😁
Ultimately it normally comes down to vibes; in this case a focus on action or a focus on story.
I would play this over any of the CODs released in the last 10 years.

I wish Titanfall was the paradigm shift that stuck.
I always thought it was a good name for a genere but can't use it these days becouse it makes people think of somebody streaming homicide.
Honestly the number of games I'd call 'Doom clones' is vanishingly small.
Like I'm okay if people don't want it to fit that subgenre, but at the same time if you like boomer shooters chances are pretty high you gonna dig HL2.
Also in the end the only thing I want is more HL-like games.
