Caine was the person Trump leaned on and quoted to justify a Syria withdrawal when he visited Iraq in 2018. The cool nickname and the fact that he was able to previously use him might be all it took to justify being his CJCS.

Caine knew he had been used- Trump put whatever words in his mouth that he wanted to afterward to justify an accelerated Syria withdrawal. I don't know how much Caine minded though.

Capability is important, but under the current administration, it's more important to ask whether he has strength of character. What will he do when - not if - Trump asks him to do something illegal, as he has already asked ask his existing appointees to do?

What makes him capable in your estimate? Fighting ISIS at the JTF level is a lot different than waging a global strategy against the PRC. Based on what I am seeing he has zero seat time on the problem set and has not been required to think at the global-strategic level.

I’ve met him as well and found him engaging. Retiring as a 3 star is no shame, only an extraordinarily small number make it to that rank to begin with, and there’s only so many four star billets.

He does not have a normal career, he waded in and out of active duty roles and was an investor in the private sector between his O-6 and O-7 timeframe and recently returned to a fund.

If you took away all the context, it would be an authentically interesting choice.
