Back in 2019: was told while making Lower Decks that “too much happens in each episode, what if someone watching is making spaghetti and only half paying attention?”

My kids tell me to watch shows that I find terribly strung out - an hour or two's story stretched over 6 eps or more. It does make me wonder if stuff is being slowed down to accommodate a distracted audience.

Yeah, I see it happening more and more. Not sure if it's to accommodate the "casual" viewer or to fill time. I thought that the streaming era would put an end to US 20+ episode series with filler eps but it feels like it's going back the other way.

I thought the same at first - that shows would be the length they needed to be, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Or perhaps I'm just getting old and am not in tune with the dramatic tastes of today's audience!

Another thought is that perhaps there's just too much stuff being made - that the good ideas are being spread a bit too thin? In 2022 there was an explosion of content - in the VFX world there weren't enough people to keep up with the demand from the streamers, studios etc. (cont)

And then we had the strikes, which stopped everything in its tracks. The 2022 glut is tailing off, hopefully things will return to some kind of normality in 2025 - unless AI puts us all out of work!

The strikes definitely put the kibosh on things. There's a whole bunch of shows that I'm waiting to return which are finally back in 2025!

It's not totally new. Back in the naughties there was a program called Alias about CIA double agents. It got canned because many people couldn't follow the plot. They wanted shorter, simpler stories.

It's such a shame that TV companies have to pander to the masses. Makes me wonder if shows like Twin Peaks could ever even be made these days.

I mean, we're still getting shows like Severance, Baby Reindeer, After the Party,... there's great stuff out there. Maybe there's just more slop to get through first? And painful exposition has been around in movies for forever.

It's the execs are out of touch with the base who are still able to or prefer to watch Trek in a syndicated form.

re: "You got three minutes" is if the episode is starting, set the water to boil. When the commercials come on, throw your noodles in, stir, & by the next break, they're done. :D

Don't know how much truth there is in this, but I once read an article which said when people today boast they are multitasking, they aren't really. They are just doing 5 things badly, rather than 1 thing well.
