When they've thrown the figure £1,000 around, which can be just 1 months of Universal credit. It doesn't sound like they are doing after the most serious.

Benefit fraud is not and has never been the problem. Neither is shoplifting. They are both symptoms of stockpiling wealth by the rich. Extreme wealth either causes inflation or it is balanced by taking that money from others. Either way huge numbers of people get poorer.

If it only applies to cheats, i don’t mind. It’ll be cheaper than trying to retrieve amounts in court (assuming that is the process). They have to give the right wing some red meat. In reality, this will impact a vanishingly small number of people and likely takes little effort

Given that benefits 'debt' is often incurred because of mistakes made at the DWP end or by difficulties with the sheer complexity of the system, AND that the level of benefits we pay is so low that basic living costs are not fully covered, I think it could catch many people.

I can't find a lot of data, that states how much individuals owe, but I did find this.

The cares Allowence one is particularly worrying. Due to recent news and stories of many an error, around very thin margins around work and carers Allowence.
