I also want to point out that one stark difference is that every Korean like, 40 and over probably remembers exactly how bloody the protests and struggle for democracy was because they lived through it and end of the dictatorships

My barely informed understanding (based on a morning of reading this stuff) is that these particular Korean police today were just some guys, as opposed to trained riot police. Does that sound right? If so that seems likely to affect the severity of response.

so, part of it is i think they weren't true believers of whatever shit yoon was peddling. the troops used are likely to be under 30, so the bogeyman of an unidentified "north korean threat" isn't likely to motivate them the same way, and it seems like they were just as surprised about the deployment

as far as riot police go, while they're likely highly trained, they were also probably just as confused as to what was going on; the police, while nationalized, isn't under the auspices of the military, but is civilian--and i'm guessing they didn't get briefed on yoon's imbecilic notion

finally, most koreans have strong memories or knowledge of the brutality of the dictatorships and the protests of the 80s, so that probably contributed to the striking restraint by the police and military, because it would have quickly escalated into a major conflagration and larger riots

I think this is very important. Almost no American under 50 has any living memory of a mass demonstration that resulted in policy change. I hesitate to blame propaganda and occupation as a sole culprit when complacency is a real factor.
