Some gays really don't like being seen as queer. I definitely am queer but most gays can't fucking stand me and rather not associate with me.

It may be a trauma response, because of how much the term had been used in a negative context in the past. Even 'gay' got that treatment before.

Not everyone has to like it, but the importance to find a unifying word is critical this time.

I get that, but for me, 'queer' isn’t just a term, it reflects how I’ve been treated. Many gay furries distance themselves from queerness, not just from trauma, but to exclude people like me. Unity isn't about words; it's about action, and I’ve rarely felt that from them.

One of my partners thinks that there is a separation between being gay for example, and being queer. One friend thinks the new pride flags divides the community. The original one had already included everyone. I'm just not sure if slapping a queer label on everyone works

I had to do more research personally. I found myself to be wrong. I saw articles that it was used universally for the LGBT community in 1994 and not 1978. I don't know when other flags were made but I consider the original flag more unifying in 2025 over the modern ones. An opinion.

I agree in that we need to get rid of acronyms and have one term to encapsulate the entire community. I’m convinced that those who create the really long acronyms are actually doing this with the intent to divide because they know many people won’t accept it.

Either that or just stick to LGBT or LGBT+. The + is already there for a reason, the more letters we add in and attempt to be inclusive the more people we end up excluding by making it about specific identities rather than a general term

Because my autistic brain would studder trying to say LGBTQIA+ In a sentence, so queer is a much better and easier replacement

3 years ago a friend of mine posted a declaration in his server not to use “the q-slur” because he saw a video by a trans youtuber calling it a slur - but he messed up by using “q***r” throughout the declaration.

Which yeah: I pointed out to him that if he really agreed with this YouTuber about it being a slur on par with the n-word, he should try imagining if he had done that with the n-word. It wouldn’t have looked good.

Interestingly, that YouTuber’s argument for it being a slur was directly because it lumps all of a diverse group of people with different opinions together as one “other” -as if she wanted to keep the divisions between Ls and Gs and Bs and Ts clear.

At first I wanted to agree, but there’s a LOT of significance to using the term LGBTQ. There’s a lot of history and thought behind it, including why the L is first. Erasing it from my vocab would feel like erasing the hard work queers have put in.

I've always kinda hated the term LGBTQ+ because while it sounds inclusive it feels like it's singling me out as a Bi person. That combined with the fact that I'll get screamed at for NOT using the term is awful.
