It didn’t resonate with you because, at the time, you couldn’t envision yourself in a past you wanted to avoid at all costs. To those of us to who could (e.g., people of color, immigrants, women, etc), it was and is a good slogan.

I've worked with scientists from the NIH, CDC & USDA. Many were immigrants. All were brilliant.

Now, talented young scientists abroad will look at the US and think: No.

Now, US students with scientific aptitude will look at degrees in science and think: No.

The road is currently mud and ruts.

Maybe it did not speak to you but t was a fine slogan. Anyone whose rights have had to be wrested from the unwilling and unfriendly governing minority, understood the racism, misogyny, repression that Trump represents. Not going back to 2015, 1967, 1964, 1954, 1920, 1898, 1868... etc.
