to be fair, this shit started with obama, who was to the right of dubya on the subject of immigration - immigrants rights lawyers and activists called him "the deporter in chief" and much of what he did (with the exception of DACA) was a template for the trump administration.

The Popularism Debate (remember the Popularism Debate?) argued that immigration is a bad issue for democrats so they should shut up and campaign on anything else. But polling from the first Trump term showed views on immigration are *malleable* and can follow opposition leadership to bad policy.

Like in 2016, 2024 shows that Trump can win national power but his margins remain thin and his down-ballot effects were negligible. The House especially is thinly held.
