Sophie and her brother Hans, along with Willi Graf, Christoph Probst, and Alexander Schmorell, all students at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, one of Germany’s oldest and most prestigious universities, and professor Kurt Huber formed an underground resistance group called White Rose.

Their resistance began on June 27, 1942. Their efforts were intended to build resistance among Germans through anti-Nazi leafletting and graffiti calling for active opposition. Their resistance was incredibly brave, and rare, but it was doomed from the start.

On February 18, 1943, the Scholl siblings dropped stacks of leaflets in the main building of the University while lectures were in progress. When Sophie threw a stack of leaflets from the top floor into the atrium to fall to the floor below, a maintenance man saw her, and called the Gestapo.

The Gestapo arrested them immediately, and found incriminating evidence on Hans and in his apartment that led them to Probst, who was arrested on the 20th. They initially thought Sophie innocent, but after Hans confessed she did likewise to protect the other members.

After a show trial before the Volksgerichtshof (People’s Court) at which the defendants were not permitted to speak (although Sophie interrupted the judge several times), they were found guilty of treason and sentenced to death by guillotine. They were executed that day at Stadelheim Prison.

Hans yelled, “es lebe die freiheit!" (long live freedom), as the blade fell. The other core members were arrested, tried, and executed within a few months. By October, all were dead, and the rest ended their resistance.
