Trauma, probably. Sometimes people learn to survive specific environments with constant risk identification and mitigation. Misplacing items means the environment is risky and our needed things in general might not be accessible....
If this makes sense, then you can ask that part of yourself if it's reacting to a very real and valid crisis that isn't currently existing. Cuz that part of you rocks. But might want a hug.
had a grad school mentor explain it to me like this: there's acute stress & baseline stress. if your baseline stress is high (and, uh. guessing it is, for obvious reasons), you can acclimate to it, but then it takes very little acute stress (like losing a remote) to tip you into 'can't cope' mode...
i dunno if that resonates, but i know i found it helpful to stop worrying about "fixing" my response to acute stressors and start thinking about what day-to-day things i could do to bring down my baseline stress instead! much less pressure to respond the right way, right away
for me its usually because its something that feels "stupid" (its not, its normal!!!) and also that doesnt have any solution except "just find the thing" which is... not a helpful plan 😅 it helps me to laugh at my amazing adhd superpowers to lose things no matter how unlikely, at incredible speeds!
