It's weird that people treat the Rubicon as an idiom for an unprecedented point of no return when Sulla had done worse already nearly 40 years prior.

wasn't his whole fight with the senate leading up to the invasion about whether his governorship (and immunity) ended earlier than he planned? Or is that also an oversimplification?

That’s a big part of it he felt (and I agree) that the law of the ten tribunes left him in command of Gaul. I believe the governorship meant more to him than immunity (though that was a nice perk)

Just absolutely incredible work my friend. Had to stop and rewind a few times just to digest everything. My bachelor’s is in early imperial history, but this gave me pause to rethink things. Cannot praise this enough
