I’ve noticed a lot of artists REALLY dislike when their OCs are compared to other characters. I don’t.
When people say that my characters remind them of/look like something else, I actually enjoy it. It’s cool to see where people identify influences or similarities in character designs.
It’s fun.

Take the W.
And I think that's why people get hung up on that, they (reasonably) don't want to be the next victim of that
And prolly also feels like their art is being roasted unprovoked
but intentional or not all art is inspired from other art
Believing one's work (or ignoring similar work) is wholly unique is really more of a trick of the ego. Everyone wants to feel seen and worthy.
And I think some look to their OCs as a path to that place. But without connection, it's like being on an island.
im personally somewhere in the middle
It just made me wish oc artists took it in stride and be like "lol yeah, it kind of is/it's inspired" instead of shutting it down.
Like I’ve seen some that vary from actual legit compliments, to straight up trolling.
I’ve had pretty much a mix of both in the past.
I've gotten chill with it now but man, back then I hated it haha
The abrasive, substanceless "this looks like x" is just annoying due to being a nothing comment
I'm happy to say that...my OC is actually really badass, though...so...
But also: I take some solace knowing that I created my OC almost 20 years ago and Olrox was an almost 1:1 Nosferatu homage before his new design hit.
It's in the eye of the beholder.
I welcome comparisons as *interesting*.
Afraid of being seen as unoriginal, some lash out if you identify the influences that inform their style on a particular track or album.
Like, "you didn't *invent music*, man."
Once I found a rabbit that by complete coincidence looked exactly my sona (back when they were masc) with a different palette and I was excited lol
It’s something I’m working to let go of, but MAN that demon can be sneaky.

It’s a normal comprehension thing, it’s drawing parallels, which is actually a good exercise
I've known many artists who invest too much of themselves in their art/characters and take offense because it's like an attack on them as a person
But if I say your OC gives off a Jessica Rabbit vibe, that is 100% a compliment!
im so happy when that happens
go nuts
It would be really fun if whenever Lunic does things the wrong way, it's the rare time that Kurt has patience, but short-tempered with everything/everyone else. Would present opportunity for humour and establishing the special bond between them.
if anyone picks up on my influences, I take that to mean I am representing myself well
whart
Acting like there's some ulterior motive to the similarities.
I do think comment intent is important too though, most people don't mean anything bad by it, but there's always the few out to try and hurt feelings.
I personally have not run into that issue but I know others have. LOL
:fearful:
Not all critiques are good, but they're all useful.
