Glad to hear the data is safe and you're working on strengthening your security and getting it back up and running. Yall do great work and didn't deserve this. :(
Facists with stuff to hide haaaate it when education and information are freely available to the public. They want you stupid and malleable. Good on archives and libraries for fighting back.
This was an attack on the independence of thought, access to information, and the sanctity of silence and security most libraries, including digital ones, offer.
Hey @internetarchive, must restore everything! ⚔️ Despite last week’s cyber issues, the data is safe. Wayback, Blog, Mastodon, and more services are up. Staff is working hard across time zones to lock down and clean up. #SpeedyCerviche #SamuraiPizzaCats #DataRestoration
Thank you so much, and I wish you good luck! Hopefully GifCities will start working again soon. May those monsters who keep destroying libraries get their butts kicked by karma.
Yeah. I’m a patient person. I still kept my bookmark for Song of the South (4K Restoration), which I really want to watch. Can’t find the movie in many other places. I’m sure it’s comeback will be grand.
especially when theyre already attacked enough by public officials
over here in NY, eric adams stripping away full library hours along with slashing their budget is such a blow to everyone... especially minority communites.
I mean, it adds up - IA just lost the court case on storing copyrighted material and is currently struggling financially; I think it's healthy to assume that profit-hungry corpos who'd like IA gone would want to double down. Kicking someone when they're down is a dishonourable but effective tactic.
It not the publishers or corporations it just a hackvists group from Russia that is all ( and if you don’t agree with that fact then I’ll respect it but I m not agreeing what you’re saying btw not defending the publisher ) pleas no more conspiracy theories please
How about making the service login only? This would reduce the attack surface for DDoS as only the login site could be reached by logged-in users, as those IPs could be automatically whitelisted and then reach the actual archive.
an ideologically/politically(which, in practice, means financially) motivated hacker group aligned with russia and other states not fond of internet freedom? we'll never know the headcount, let alone names, and they move on to other targets, other orders
well i wouldn't say "not fond of internet freedom" they apparently "targeted the archive because it belongs to the USA and is linked to the US government, which is in alliance and support of israel" should be noted, the internet archive DON'T HAVE ANY LINKS TO THE US GOVERNMENT!
I have got to think (or at least hope) that libraries aren't the focus of the attack, but if one government service is vulnerable others may be. Good luck getting back and good work

The only historical event comparable to something like this would be the burning of the Library of Alexandria...
Either way, I hate how they're attacking those preserving real knowledge.

to then be attacked by private groups is so... 😫😫
Internet Archive is an essential part of preserving media and internet history.
Side note: Imagine how big of an absolutely loser you have to be to run a cyber attack on something like a library
pretty sure theyd get wrecked if found out
If they can afford expensive lawyers & legal shenanigans, they can easily afford some grey/black hats.
It's all speculation, though
Keep up the good work team, we'll beat them together.
