Since copyright for a collection of works is essentially additive (very basic simplification) the original version of the character and original stories are now free, while the novel parts in later stories are still in copyright (storylines, changes to the character, etc)

I have been an unabashed fan of Popeye for at least 50 years! As a little girl I loved all the shenanigans. Later, I learned how AMAZING the original Olive Oyl was, too. So, now that he’s in the public domain, I’m sure there’ll be tons of geegaws with their countenances..which I will guiltily buy😊
