So when the identity cards were abolished in 1951, did it become legal to drive a car on a public road in Britain without identification? Is that still legal today? (Very jealous/embarrassed if UK is freer in this regard)

Technically, no, but if you’re stopped by the police and do not have ID on hand you’ll typically be issued a “producer” which requires you to visit a police station with your licence within 7 days.

I don't know offhand the history of UK driver's licenses or when they became obligatory in that way, but the wartime identity card was a separate thing in any event.
