Outsiders, truly do not understand how bad things are. Even the so called ‘good news’ are nothing more than a small hand out to shut inside people from asking over and over. The NIH is just doing whatever HHS tells them to do. The lies employees are told by admin are unreal

I agree the situation is grim but whats demonstrated in this piece is that the administration is beholden to congress on this.

There is bipartisan support for medical research. We cannot say the same for much else. So there is a lot to be hopeless about but NIH can survive yet.

There isn't "bipartisan support" for research. That's bullshit. The Republicans are doing this, in case you hadn't noticed. Congress could stop this at any moment.

That's just not true. At max, they can call in executive officials for a hearing. But they won't do it yet because many cases still winding their way through the courts. And they have FY25 budget first.

US has huge problems due to climate/energy policy but NIH is absolutely not doomed

Correct. Republicans are fully supportive of this. Once you realise it is not research per se that is being targeted, rather it is scientists being targeted.

While I agree that it's not lost (and that total despair won't help), it's also important to assess things honestly. And currently, we are losing. Scientists are going to need to get a lot better at thinking collectively and pulling together, and fast.
