None of this is a distraction. For one, Team Trump is not that calculating. He, especially, is often winging it.
Or, in a sense, all of it is a distraction. Each awful thing draws some attention, making it hard to focus on any one awful thing. But each thing itself is real, not merely distraction.

Both my kids have relied heavily on special education programs and my wife runs a special education nonprofit, so if you tell me that the Trump assault on special education is just a “distraction” I’m going to block you into the fucking sun.

Winging it? Sure, I’ll buy that but he understands when he needs to wipe bad off the front page with something else he’d rather you focus on. It’s all bad. But some are meant to distract.
Which is why @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social is so wrong to pretend to only swing at particular pitches. Everything you ignore becomes normalized to make it worse.
- takes away the Presidential Pardon?
- codifies laws against Citizens United?
- removes the Electoral College?
- codifies Medicare for All?
- the Justice Dept CAN prosecute a sitting President?
"I'm not impressed by these "When Trump does X, it's a distraction from Y" pieces. I think it's simpler: he's a multi-faceted asshole."
And sometimes it functions like a distraction, where Awful Thing Y ends up taking attention from Awful Thing X, because we only have so much attention to divvy up.
But that's from Team Trump really doing X and Y. Not from a clever plan to pretend Y only to draw attention from X.
- Pick on more vulnerable
- Get others to help you gang up
- Try and feel powerful enjoying others suffering

because it is never enough to quash your own suffering
For years, they have advocated that children born with disabilities shouldn't be aborted and could still live meaningful lives, get quality education and employment
They are completely silent
I guess it depends on what you mean by "doing anything."
Rather, I meant "doing" as in literally anything he does, including public communication, not that he is personally orchestrating everything.
Just constantly testing every boundary looking for weaknesses to exploit.
There is no real larger strategy other than destroy government. It is just feral.
