I've operated under the view that Trump's calls today with Trudeau and Sheinbaum would result in de minimis concessions by Canada and Mexico, at which point Trump would call off the tariffs and declare "victory!" I'm not sure if the fact that there's no Trump "ask" makes my view more or less likely.

Dunno about that - the demand is Canada become the 51st state. He has said it. His VP has said it. His Secretary of State has hinted at it. Yes, it's a preposterous demand. But we've seen how writing off Trump's ideas as simply not real because they are preposterous has backfired.

I disagree - the concrete demand is agree to give up your sovereignty and let us rule you. It can't quite be put that simply by them for obvious reasons, but it is clear from Trump that is the demand.

It's personal against Trudeau. A series of incidents from Trump's first swing at the US with Trudeau have had him spending four years to plot revenge. Unlikely there will be anyone left to stop him if he goes after Canadian steel again. National security be damned.

I didn't mean him personally, I meant the United States and other countries when they imposed economic penalties in 2022, and ratcheted them up in 2023 and '24.
