My rep said his office was receiving lots of calls from constituents. That is more effective than perpetually online people screaming at elected officials.

Elected officials tell constituents to reach out to them ALL the time if they have problems. They have staff dedicated to constituent concerns and who log this contact. This is basic. And they always say, they listen to the people in their district or state who vote for them.

I agree that it's not either/or.
People seeing info online about bad things happening, and an increased number of posts urging them to contact their representatives—including some with phone numbers or suggested templates—likely increased the number doing it.
Not the only factor, sure, but a factor.

Respectfully disagree. I had repeated arguments with people who actually said that yelling at elected officials online was a better idea. The idea to contact your rep or senator is not at all new.
