To the (flimsy) extent I can even consider myself a Jewish person, I have always regarded “my” Judaism as an ethics rather than an “identity.” It shatters the logic of “membership.”

Torah commands love of the “separated out” one (the stranger/foreigner/sojourner/other) more often than love of God!

I feel like support of the underrepresented and oppressed was such a strong foundation of my Jewish upbringing, but as soon as Israel comes into the conversation the morals change. I’ve never understood it.

Well my family is reform Jewish, German and immigrated in the 1870’s. They also were pretty judgmental of Eastern European Jews. My ancestors, while not Guggenheim’s, were industrialists at the turn of the century. They were also a part of the early Reform Judaism movement in the USA.
