Also he was great to listen to in the Mets broadcast booth when he would visit on occasion before he got sick. Very intelligent pitcher.

I am a yankee fan but he was my first sports hero. It felt like he was really good every game and the metrics reflect that. His drop and drive mechanics are out of favor now but it made for such an iconic style. 200+ strikeout seasons before "launch angle" hitting. 61 complete game shutouts!

Think it was his second tour with the Mets? I don't remember him throwing it before then, although of course I didn't see as much of him while he was with the Reds. He had a standard two-seam changeup before 1977.

I know he was using it to great effect with the Chisox in 1984 and '85.
