Paris’ new 2024-2030 Climate Plan drop speed limits, repurpose traffic lanes, remove 60,000 parking spots and create urban “oases” to combat extreme heat…

Meanwhile in #Toronto it's pedal to the metal in the opposite direction, thanks to Doug Ford and auto-erotic voters who feel that cities exist to service cars.
"Drop speed limits"? Yeah, this is how the Left ends up hurting their cause more than helping it.
Speed limits are already too restrictive and few people bother to follow them, Trying to lower them even further only aggravates the average individual and pushes them to the support other groups.
This is great, especially the regreening. I’ve been in Paris during a few days of 35 degrees plus and it felt much hotter than the same temperature does in my area of London
Isn’t there a stealth regreening of Paris happening already?
Totally beyond me that govts aren’t enforcing much lower speed limits across the board. Low hanging fruit of saving emissions and resources. Let alone lives.
One key issue they are missing is what to do about Paris’s iconic slate rooftops, which absorb a lot of heat. While historic and beautiful, being in a building with a slate rooftop during a heatwave is unbearable.
it’s a tragedy of the commons. so. anyone and everyone that ‘flies’ is a fracker. no matter how selectively they choose which science stuff to “believe” or not “believe”. if you fly you are a fracker.
WHen cars have to travel slower, there's a point at which they start producing more emissions. They have ideal cruising speeds that need to be in their highest gear for maximum efficiency. Of course this does not apply to inner city traffic.
Yes, but as folks realise they would be quicker cycling, walking, or on the bus they may decide to leave the car at home altogether. No driving is zero emissions.
Not quite "no car transit" as opposed to limited very significantly (locals are allowed, for example, to drive their cars as are "destination" trips (drivers/cars w/end destination in zone).
Not straight away but gradually I’m sure they could. Of course causation probably runs the other direction. And this is report is a reference to changes in Paris, not the US.
I doubt there will be many who for economic reasons are forced to live tens of kilometres from their work will flock to push bikes. Efficient public transport is critical for big cities but often impractical in small regional areas. Studies suggest 33+dwellings/Ha are needed for viable public tpt.
Agree on public transport. Ireland’s sprawl pattern of settlement fuels our car dependency. But 2 things: e-bikes now make a lot of journeys much more feasible. Also, that many commuters (and urban dwellers) can’t cycle is not an argument for safe cycling infra being prioritised within urban areas
Agree & safe cycling infrastructure needs to separate cycles AND E-scooters from pedestrians as well as cars. Footpaths are for feet, not wheels. Safe walking is important too.

Let's hope they also figure out how to stop the Metro smelling of piss while they're at it though 🤞🤣
