It's depressing to hear about journalists being laid off. Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I think people should get their news from journalists, not TikTok.

What do we do? I had online subs to the LA Times, NYT, Washington Post and they all went wrong on us. My local paper was sold, hollowed out, went from reported news 5 days a week to press releases by mail 2 days a week. I'm TRYING to support news, but subscribers are no match for PE
I understand that. My point is that being a subscriber doesn't even count anymore. The rich dudes come in, buy the paper, hollow it out and blame the subscribers.
I think it's both... a lot of people's attention spans have been conditioned nowadays to only tolerate short, stimulating bursts of information/visuals. People can't read -- or understand -- longform anything anymore. Compounding that is the rightwing billionaires buying up all the news outlets 😔
If my nieces are any indication, despite growing up in a family of writers, with paper newspapers all over the dining table, they don't "read the paper" as a habit.
However, this has been a steady erosion for 20 years, and it's not consumer driven.
There are many journalists on TikTok… it isn’t an either/or proposition. (There’s other good reasons to abandon TikTok but lack of real journalism isn’t one of them)
The "journalists" at every major media organization are lying in our face about what we're all watching happen. Guess where many of the journalists trying to share the raw truth, no fluff, ended up when they "couldn't cut it" in mainstream media?
My thought is this. The entire world has changed. You can now make money independently if you’re creative enough. Go be a journalist and create your narrative.
FWIW, I still read the AP, BBC and Reuters. I have no TV/cable, and am perfectly capable of deciding how I feel about the information I gather. So, some of us still seek out unfiltered (as much as possible) reports.
Perhaps if they hadn't spend the last two years normalizing Trump's ravings and gaslighting us about things like awkward hand gestures we would support them more.
If journalists were old-fashioned and would research stories that people did not know about, all would still read newspapers.
Journalists today are mostly just lazy, are more "activists" than controlling the governing class, and repeat what lobbyists and politicians tell them.
I'm okay with journalists ON TikTok... But make no mistake "journalists" is the key ingredient in every format, be it social media, print, interview, panelist, etc.

Useless.
yeah, no thanks.
I'm thinking Chat GPT has more to blame for the redundancies than people sharing info on TicTok.
