I live in Austria and you have to admit you made a mistake. It’s not just fine print, it’s very clearly printed. And why would they give you a refund if you’ve already downloaded the ticket?you have the ticket and they can’t take it away from you, so why would they give you the money back?

I am sorry you lost money! I’ve also made that mistake more than once. I still would rather sit in a train than fly and some of the deals are amazing. Vienna to Gdansk for €30!

Fully agree, I'm not aware of any other rail company with such a stupid two-step process neither. Why is there a need at all to "activate" the ticket you already paid for? I often buy ÖBB tickets long before traveling and it's always a pain to remember shortly before the journey to download the PDF.

If you Have the app and are traveling within Austria. You don’t need the PDF. It’s when you travel from Austria to eastern European countries that you need to save the pdf in your calendar

It is a dumb rule, especially since scanning the code is what should « activate » it. Where were you going ? Eurail/interrail pass might be cheaper ? @seatsixtyone.bsky.social is well worth a follow and has great information on the pitfalls of our capricious and fragmented European rail system.

Hi, sorry about your bad experience but in defense of the ÖBB the rule (which I suppose was established to prevent people from downloading/printing/using the ticket while at the same time appyling for a refund) is fairly visible; it's not in the fine print.

In other words: The ÖBB process for handling digital tickets is completely nuts, and instead of fixing this, ÖBB transfers the risks to the clients and leave them alone with a very poor customer experience.

I have seen this weird “threat”/notice before. My guess is it would not withstand a proper consumer protection trial. It’s upon them to invalidate tickets if necessary or take the risk of technically incapable.

BTW- who says your “download” was actually complete and successful? Do they really track that?

I would try reject payment at the CC level if possible and see.
