You receive a call on your phone.

The caller says they're from your bank and they're calling about a suspected fraudulent payment.

"Oh yeah," you think. Obvious scam, right?

The caller says "I'll send you an in-app notification to prove I'm calling from your bank."

I heard one recently which got around 'phone your bank'. They'd call, say its the bank etc, and suggest you call your bank to confirm, using the number on the back of your card. They'd leave the line connected but play a dial tone, then swap to their bank person once you'd picked up and dialed.

The telephone network in the uk was modified about a decade ago to make this impossible. ‘Calling subscriber hold’ is no longer a feature - it used to be provided to let someone put down one extension and move to another to continue a call.

Great info, glad they stopped that. I have no clue when the story was from, I saw a youtube vid on it a few years ago. I think it was about the uk.

Yes, it emerged as a new tactic and then was quite quickly stopped - telcos usually move glacially, but not in this case!

My bank branch is ten minutes walk away. Any calls from the bank and I say ‘don’t worry, I’m going to the bank anyway I’ll sort it out when I’m in there.’ Nothing is so urgent they can’t wait twenty minutes for it to be resolved. Credit card is usually them not believing I’ve been Christmas shopping
